SINGAPORE: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Tuesday (May 28) that he plans to make a series of introductory visits to neighbouring countries, including Singapore’s closest neighbour, Malaysia.
Mr. Huang Oath Two weeks ago, he was appointed Singapore’s fourth prime minister.
He said in a Facebook post that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had called him two weeks ago to invite him to “make an introductory visit to Malaysia as soon as possible before the annual leaders’ retreat.” Last year’s leaders’ retreat was held in October, when then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met Anwar in Singapore.
“I am pleased to accept his invitation and will visit Kuala Lumpur in advance as part of a series of introductory visits to Asean capitals,” Wong said.
“Malaysia is our closest neighbour. We have a common history and we have common interests.”
Wong met Malaysian Foreign Minister Utama Haji Mohamad Hassan on Tuesday during his official visit to Singapore.
“We have met several times in the past. But this is his first visit to Singapore as foreign minister and my first meeting with him as prime minister,” Mr Wong said.
Both men reiterated their “shared commitment to developing a win-win partnership between Singapore and Malaysia”.
“Malaysia will also chair ASEAN in 2025 and we look forward to working closely together to advance the regional cooperation agenda,” Wong said.
