Fearing that the territory will be taken away by neighboring countries, some people hope that the government will build border fences with neighboring countries, especially Vietnam, but Prince Hun Sen said that if there is money to build border fences, it should be built. The border line is the right choice to serve the economic and trade fields of the two countries.

In response to people’s desire for the government to build a border fence, former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen believes that this is not a good option. In a voice message on the afternoon of August 12, 2024, Prince Hun Sen acknowledged people’s concerns about losing territory in the past due to historical factors, because Cambodia was under French colonial rule at that time and was occupied by France. France, Cambodian territory to Thailand, Vietnam and part of Laos. However, the leakage of false information prompted the Cambodian government to cut off ties with four provinces in Vietnam, which has now become a political strategy.

Regarding the idea of building a border fence, Prince Hun Sen asked: “How about building a fence in these four provinces, or building a fence in all provinces bordering Vietnam, or building a fence on the border with Thailand, plus the border with Laos?” In addition to the Berlin Wall, the Korean-South Korean border, and the US-Mexico fence, which other countries have built fences within the framework of cooperation with neighboring countries?

Samdech Techo further asked whether fencing the Mekong River, the Bassac River or many other lakes and rivers that flow from Cambodia to Vietnam or from Vietnam to Cambodia would be built to close these rivers by building fences?

But Prince Hun Sen replied that a better option than building fences is to build good road infrastructure along the border, including border strips and commercial roads, and to build schools, hospitals and houses so that people can live a good life. He stressed that the border should be built into a border of peace, friendship, cooperation and development rather than conflict.

We need to be good neighbors and strive to build the remaining 16% of border posts, and that solid border fence, the people along the border, are the real force in defending the border. This was further confirmed by Cambodian Senate President and former Prime Minister Prince Hun Sen.
