Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has clarified the purpose of Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kattar’s visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, stressing that the trip was not politically motivated but was motivated by “human compassion”.

Gonsalves recently explained on NBC Radio’s Face to Face that Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adija Palmer, came to Jamaica for medical reasons and not to get involved in politics. The Prime Minister was responding to questions about Kartel’s coming to Jamaica following an interview with a Jamaican radio host who tried to understand the reason behind the support the entertainer has received in St. Vincent Georgia.

Gonsalves revealed that the cartel’s lawyers had contacted him a few weeks ago about the possibility of receiving treatment for Graves’ disease in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, noting that the country has expertise in this area. He confirmed that Cuban endocrinologists and the medical team in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have an excellent reputation for handling such cases.

The prime minister said he agreed to facilitate the visit of Qatar out of kindness and confirmed that the government would not fund Qatar’s stay. “This decision was made out of compassion, not politics,” Gonsalves said, adding that his commitment to humanitarian support was rooted in the principle of kindness.

Responding to criticism of his decision, Gonsalves noted that while some condemned the move, others praised it, stressing that as Prime Minister he needed to ensure that all medical arrangements were properly managed and consult with the Chief Medical Officer to confirm the readiness of Khattel’s treatment.

In an interview with Jamaican journalists, Gonsalves clarified that despite Vybz Kartel having been convicted in the past, he is now deemed innocent. “The Supreme Court has found him not guilty,” Gonsalves insisted.

Gonsalves also denied suggestions that the visit from Kartel was linked to any political deal, and said firmly: “I have won five elections without the help of Mr Palmer and I will win the sixth election without the help of Mr Palmer.”

The Prime Minister pointed out that Kartel Medical care received at St. VincentHe acknowledged that the media had paid considerable attention to the cartel’s visit, but urged the public not to over-analyze the matter.

Gonsalves reflected on his own medical experience, emphasizing that St. Vincent Georgia’s health care system has come a long way over the past 23 years. He concluded that while no system is perfect, the care provided by St. Vincent Georgia is effective.

The Jamaican dancehall star’s visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines continues to attract public attention, but Gonsalves reiterated that the focus should still be on the humanitarian aspects of the trip.
