Last week, Prime Minister Huakawameliku inaugurated the upgrade of the Faleloa Wharf on Haapaifoa Island. The $300,000 pa’anga Government-funded project marks progress in Tonga’s maritime infrastructure, particularly in the outer islands.
Originally built in the 1980s, the Faleroa Wharf had deteriorated due to natural disasters and rising sea levels, with parts of the structure being submerged at high tide. Given the critical need for reliable marine access, the Government, in partnership with the Tonga Ministry of Infrastructure and the Ports Authority, responded with this much-needed upgrade.
The new pier is 1.25 meters higher to withstand tidal changes, ensuring safe and unobstructed passage of passengers and cargo. The pier structure is divided into three different heights, solving the tidal fluctuations that previously hampered operations. In addition, dredging around the berth has improved berthing conditions, and solar lighting has been installed to increase safety at night. Both sides of the pier have been reinforced to meet future environmental challenges.
The upgraded Falloa Wharf is a major lifeline for residents of Falloa, Foa Island and Kauvai Ha’ano, who frequently travel to Lifuka for work, education and other needs. Kauvai Ha’ano District Officer, Mr. Siosifa Tu’itupou Maka, expressed his gratitude for the project, saying, “This upgrade has made a significant difference in the lives of our people. We can now carry out our daily activities more efficiently without having to worry about the tides.”
The initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to improving infrastructure on the outer islands and ensuring safe and sustainable transport for all residents, with similar projects to follow on Nomuka and Uiha later this week.
