President pledges support for DIN

However, the Netherlands Institute for Diaspora (DIN) is working to address the housing problem. Although entrepreneurs have offered some options, it is not enough. President Chan Santokhi has agreed to provide DIN with a space at the Amsterdam Consulate. The head of state made this commitment during a meeting with DIN Chairman John Brewster. Current ongoing issues were also discussed.

Since DIN was relaunched in June 2023, the organization has worked independently to build the necessary structures despite a lack of resources and housing. Uriel Sabajo and Ranjan Akloe are also members of the board. The board is said to be fully committed to keeping DIN running. DIN is currently organizing workshops and a working group in Suriname is developing plans to pilot a “Return Summit” in Suriname in November 2024.

Together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of International Commerce and International Cooperation, we are also working on setting up a one-stop office for expatriates to arrange things more efficiently in Suriname. In addition, with the support of the Ministry of Education and the Dutch business community, school furniture, computers and books are being shipped to Suriname. The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture has identified schools that need Dutch support. This adoption project is going well, but more support is needed from the Dutch side.

The President also admitted that there were not enough resources to provide full support, but he promised to try his best to provide the necessary assistance. He also called on the expatriates, especially entrepreneurs, to provide the necessary support to DIN so that business can be carried out faster and more efficiently. This will bring a win-win situation for both countries.
