President Irfaan Ali announced tonight that three major bridges in the country will be free of tolls upon completion.
“Once the New Demerara Harbour Bridge is completed, it will be toll free to cross the bridge. For those who argue about maths, you don’t need a formula. The formula is simple… tolls will be free,” Ali declared at the opening of the new Crane to Schoonord highway in Region Three.
The president made the disclosure after saying he had “big news” to announce to the country and to silence his critics.
As he announced that the Demerara Port Bridge was toll-free, he continued: “We believe in equality. We are discussing the possibility of acquiring the Babis Bridge… Once the acquisition is completed, by the time we build the new river bridge, the Babis River Bridge will also be toll-free. If the negotiations are not completed by the time the new bridge is built… the Babis River Bridge will also be toll-free at the same time,” he said.
“So for those who have problems… your problems are bigger now… and the Wismar Bridge will also be free. We are building a bridge between the hearts of Guyanese and it is free,” he added.
