President Hakainde Hichilema was honoured to be the guest of honour today at the launch of the Muchira Smart Village project in Namwala District. This ground-breaking initiative aims to drive rural development through digital innovation and is supported by Huawei Technologies Zambia.
“We express our sincere gratitude to Huawei Technologies Zambia, which is in line with our government’s digital agenda to promote development in rural areas,” President Hichilema said.
The smart village model, which includes a communications tower and a solar system that can power many homes, reflects the strong bilateral relationship between Zambia and China, which was further strengthened last year when President Hichilema met with President Xi Jinping and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. in China. The Muchira model will be replicated in 100 other rural and remote areas in Zambia.

President Hichilema noted: “This initiative reflects our government’s strategic approach to building partnerships to achieve a digitally inclusive society and become a middle-income country by 2030.”
The project specifically targets rural schools, providing teachers and students with electronic educational resources to enhance their research capabilities and basic digital skills. It is part of a broader effort to foster a culture of digital innovation and entrepreneurship, drive grassroots economic growth and create jobs.
“The people of Muchira must be vigilant in maintaining and securing this project,” President Hichilema urged, stressing the importance of community management to ensure the success and sustainability of the project.
Through this and similar initiatives, Zambia aims to create a more digitally inclusive society, paving the way for substantial economic progress and improving the quality of life for the rural population.
