President Hakainde Hichilema has held an official funeral service for the late former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, who died on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

President Hichilema also declared Monday, August 19, as a national day of mourning in memory of the late former First Lady.

This is in recognition of the contribution made by the late Dr Mwanawasa to humanity during her tenure as First Lady from 2002 to 2008.

In a statement, Cabinet Secretary Patrick Kangwa said the late former first lady supported the vulnerable in society through the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative.

Mr Kangwa said the late former First Lady will be laid to rest on Monday, August 19, 2024, at the Leopards Hill Memorial Park in Lusaka.

He said the formal funeral will be held at 10 a.m. at the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Cross with a requiem church service.

Mr Kangwa further suggested that all entertainment on radio and television should be suspended and national flags should be flown at half-mast during the national mourning period from 6am to 6pm.

He added that people intending to attend official funerals should adhere to the preventive public health measures set by the Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of the disease.
