President Hakainde Hichilema yesterday officially launched the Tennor and Amatheon Agricultural Expansion Farms in Mumbwa District, Central Province. The President thanked farmers for responding to the call to produce food all year round and encouraged commercial farmers to share their knowledge, skills and machinery with neighbouring small-scale farmers.
“This collaborative approach not only increases productivity but also builds a sense of community,” President Hichilema said.
In an engagement with traditional leaders in the Mumbwa region, led by Senior Chief Shakumbila, the President reiterated the government’s commitment to building palaces for traditional leaders, providing free education and creating jobs in various fields to improve livelihoods. “Together we will overcome these challenges and build a prosperous Zambia for all,” he added.
The President, however, also lamented the ongoing forest fires in Central Province. He called on traditional leaders to help control these fires, noting that they destroy forests that are vital for livestock farmers. The call came during a meeting with six traditional leaders of Amatheon Agri Farm.
President Hichilema encountered the forest fire while on his way to an agricultural company and stressed that wanton fires posed a threat to both the environment and livestock farmers. Soon after the meeting, a fierce fire engulfed the area near where the helicopter was parked, forcing the pilot to divert the helicopter to another location.
President Hichilema also addressed the legacy of farm encroachment at Amation Agricultural Company and advised the company, which is also involved in agro-processing, to introduce a growers’ scheme to empower locals.
“We encourage commercial farmers to consider sharing their knowledge, skills and machinery with neighbouring small-scale farmers. This collaborative approach will not only increase productivity but also build a sense of community,” President Hichilema reiterated.
