Mzimba, July 30, Mana: President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says his government is committed to rebuilding Malawi after decades of neglect.
However, Chakwera said people should remember that reconstruction takes longer than destruction.
Speaking at the Janda Trade Centre on Tuesday, Chakwera said Malawi needed a good road network and bridges to facilitate travel.
“As a government we will rebuild Malawi but it will take time so you have to be patient but we will develop this country,” Chakwera told the gathering.
He said the Government would ensure construction of the M1 motorway was completed.
“We are committed to meeting all development needs. The biggest challenge is funding, but we will ensure that all projects are completed.
In her speech, Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara commended the President for launching the construction of the M1 highway which had been neglected for years by the previous regime.
Hara also asked the president to intervene in programs such as the social cash transfer program, which she said excluded some eligible beneficiaries.
“Some eligible people are not on the list because those entrusted to implement the scheme recruit their relatives at the expense of eligible poor people,” she said.
President Chakwera has since called on Malawians to care for one another and help one another, stressing that social security programmes should help those in need.
He has since asked the Minister of Gender, Social Welfare and Community Services, Jean Sendeza, to look into the issue of social security beneficiaries to ensure that only those in need and eligible avail of the scheme.
Senior Chief Mabirabo had earlier spoken in which he pleaded with the government for food aid, saying most communities had suffered poor harvests and famine was imminent.
