Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, 65, swam in the long-polluted Seine on Wednesday, 27 Cancer, to prove the river is clean enough to host swimming events during the 2024 Olympics.
“It’s a great age,” he said during his swim. The water is very, very good. It’s a little chilly.”
Concerns have been raised about the cleanliness of the French capital’s rivers after sewage flowed into them, the Associated Press reported.
The French government was forced to spend $1.5 billion to clean up the river in preparation for the July 26 race.
Even after this investment, multiple tests of the river’s water quality showed unsuccessful results, according to the Associated Press.
But with rain reportedly stopping and clearing weather since the beginning of July, new laboratory tests suggest the Seine is now ready for the Olympics.
Paris will host the Olympics from July 26 to August 11.
