President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Tuesday said the main objective of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government is to ensure equitable development for all communities in Guyana.
The Head of State made the remarks while attending the North Pakaramas District Games held at Kamana Village in Region Eight, where he pledged that government will continue to invest in the region.
“The People’s Progressive Party is on a mission, and that mission is to connect our nation, to bridge all divides, to unite our people, to build prosperity in every community, so that our Amerindian brothers and sisters, the indigenous peoples of our country will not be left out of the development of our country,” said President Ali.
In this context, he added that it was for this reason that he came to the region along with the Ministers of Agriculture and Tourism, Industry and Commerce, who he said would work with officials in the region to achieve certain agricultural goals, among others.
According to President Ali, an investment plan for tourism in inland areas has begun.
He said these types of investments ensured that inland areas could achieve the same level of development as coastal areas.
He added: “We’ve invested tens of billions of dollars in infrastructure, in fields, in roads, in schools, in health centers, because we want you to have the best health care, we want you to have better transportation.”
President Ali, however, stressed the importance of connectivity and said that over the next three months, the government will work with villages in Region Eight to provide better internet services to these communities and reduce the cost of data.
Meanwhile, the Head of State said the government has invested and will continue to invest in providing grants and scholarships to inland communities because they want the young people of these villages to be able to do their best.
“This is our wish, we want the best for all of you, the young people, all the villagers. We have revived the LCDS, and in this village alone, the LCDS has provided you with nearly $14 million, and this year you will receive another $14 million to support the development of the village,” he said.
Furthermore, he said from the supplementary budget, the communities received more than $8.5 million so the government was working hard to invest in order to improve their lives.
He added: “If you just look around your communities, if you just look around the region, you’ll see the improvements that are happening, the dramatic improvements that are happening…We’re doing this because we care about you and we’re going to continue to work so that more of you can become doctors, physicians, health professionals, teachers, whatever you want to be, we’re willing to invest so that you can be that person.”
