This year’s independent theme is “Planning Together Our United and Transformative Future”.
The Solomon Islands Independence Anniversary Celebrations Coordinating Committee is preparing for the country’s 46th Independence Day on July 7 and 8, 2024.
This year’s theme, “Planning Together Our United and Transformed Future”, has been approved by the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC).
Official events include a thanksgiving service at St. Barnabas Cathedral on Sunday, July 7, and an Independence Anniversary celebration at the National Stadium on Monday, July 8. The thanksgiving service will begin at 2:00 pm and will be open to invited guests, dignitaries and the public, with a speech by the Honourable Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele.
On Monday 8 July, two float parades will depart from the east and west ends of Honiara and converge at the National Stadium at 6am. The eastern float will depart from the Henderson Police Station in East Honiara and the western float will depart from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) compound. The parade will be led by the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and will include cultural groups, government departments, members of the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), Honiara City Council (HCC), State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), schools and other invited groups.
The main official parade, speeches, honours and awards, entertainment and the swearing-in ceremony will take place at the National Stadium. This year’s celebrations will also include the swearing-in of the newly elected Governor, Rev. David Tiwa Kapu of the Central Islands Province, who was elected on June 17. He will take the oath of allegiance and swear to perform the duties of the Governor.
The official programmes on July 7 and 8 will be broadcast live on radio and online by the national broadcaster. In addition, an entertainment programme for youth and the public will be held in the multi-purpose area of the Honiara Youth Centre from Saturday, July 6 to Monday, July 8. The programme will include live performances by gospel and secular music groups, cultural dances and a live string band.
The organising committee encourages Honiara’s business establishments and communities to participate in these events. The committee also urges communities across the country to join in the festivities and display national colours during the weekend celebrations.
