Prasar Bharati will launch its own over-the-top (OTT) platform in August. The platform aims to broadcast family-friendly content to promote Indian values and knowledge. The platform will be free to watch for a few years.
The platform will also provide space for information content and current affairs and highlight content providers such as Sri Adhikari brothers, actor Kabir Bedi and filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
The Indian government started work on the platform in September last year when it issued a tender seeking help in designing, developing, commissioning, operating and maintaining the OTT platform. The platform plans to reach even the remotest villages in India so that everyone can use it.
The move comes amid government concerns over the type of content available on certain OTT platforms. In May last year, OTT platforms such as Prime Video and Netflix were advised not to broadcast “abusive and vulgar” content. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting blocked around 18 OTT platforms and social media accounts associated with them for “broadcasting vulgar and obscene” content.
