PowerCom officials said the decision to build a tower in the area was based on a clear understanding of the potential of the region.
Minister of Information and Communications Technology Emma Theofelus said her department had a clear and determined vision: to transform the country into a digitally inclusive nation where technology empowers all citizens and becomes a cornerstone of progress.
Theophilus made the remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony of PowerCom in Mupini, Kavango West Region last week.
This vision underpins every aspect of government’s work, she said, from formulating national policy to spearheading key infrastructure development programmes.
“We are actively pursuing several initiatives to build a digital future. Our ‘Smart Namibia’ strategy is committed to using technology as a powerful tool to drive economic growth, enhance service delivery across sectors and empower citizens to actively participate in shaping their own destiny,” she said.
“The Universal Access Plan is a cornerstone initiative to expand broadband connectivity across the country, especially in underserved rural areas like Kavango West. These plans are not just rhetoric; they are concrete, carefully planned and executed steps to ensure that all Namibians have the opportunity to thrive in the digital age.”
Empowering communities
She added that PowerCom is not just building infrastructure, they are building bridges.
“They are bridging the digital divide, connecting people to a world of information and opportunities, and enabling Kavango West to actively participate in the digital age. This newfound connectivity will pave the way for a wave of innovation and entrepreneurship, boosting economic growth, making Lendu more prosperous and the Kavango region more vibrant,” said Theofelus.
PowerCom CEO Beatus Amadhila said building the infrastructure was only one piece of the puzzle.
“We understand the importance of building strong relationships with the communities we serve. We are committed to working hand in hand with the people of Mupini and Kavango West regions to ensure these towers are effective in meeting your needs. This includes actively seeking your feedback on how to optimise the use of the towers and identify new sites,” he said.
“We are open to exploring further opportunities to expand connectivity across the region, prioritizing areas that currently lack connectivity. We envision these towers to be a catalyst for positive change, a foundation for collaboration, and a springboard for innovation,” Amadhila added.
