The Portuguese Navy is taking part in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) exercise with a frigate and 167 soldiers, which aims to strengthen combat readiness and interaction between participating countries.

The frigate D. Francisco de Almeida is taking part in the multinational exercise North Viking (NV24), which will take place on September 3 in Iceland and North Atlantic waters, the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

“The exercise, which began on August 26 and was organized by the United States of America, brings together forces from eight Atlantic Alliance countries: Portugal, Iceland, the United States, Denmark, France, Norway, the Netherlands and Poland, with the aim of enhancing preparedness and interoperability among participating countries,” the statement said.

The Portuguese Navy said its participation in NV24 showed how NATO was committed to security and stability in the North Atlantic region, “a region of vital strategic importance for the sea lines of communication between North America and Europe.”

“Through this exercise, allies train together to refine tactics, techniques and procedures to ensure a quick and effective response to any potential threat,” the Navy explained.

It also noted that NV24 demonstrated the importance of the strategic relationship between NATO allies, “particularly in the context of North Atlantic operations, where continued cooperation is essential to maintaining global peace and security.”

” is part of NATO’s Standing Maritime Group One and will participate in the Atlantic Alliance’s Operation Shining Shield from July 29 to November 16, 2024.
