After the European Parliament elections, the far-right party will have more representatives than the center-right, pro-Ukraine European People’s Party (EPP) led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to political forecasts.

The split does not mean the European People’s Party, the largest political group in the European Parliament, will be relegated to second place, as the fragmented far-right parties will almost certainly be unable to unite. However, it is a sign that Europe is shifting to the right.

The European People’s Party, which aims to come in first place in next week’s election, is expected to win 170 seats. Meanwhile, the two main right-wing groups – European Conservatives and Reformists and Identity and Democracy – are vying for 144 seats.

There are other far-right parties in the European Parliament whose representatives are all but guaranteed to enter the parliament. Germany’s Alternative for Germany is expected to win 16 seats, while Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party is vying for 10. France’s Reconquista is seeking five seats, Poland’s Federalist Party six and Bulgaria’s pro-Kremlin Renaissance Party three.

This would bring the number of far-right MEPs to 184. How these far-right MEPs will unite after the elections remains an open question.
