Yesterday, a press conference was held at Kairaba Police Station to inform the public and brief the criminals on the new tactics used to commit taxi robberies.
Recall that on June 17, the police revealed that they had arrested Abubacarr Touray, a 22-year-old taxi driver from Fajikunda, for allegedly planning and carrying out a violent robbery on June 16, 2024 as the leader of a gang of six.
Regional Crime Police Officer Pateh Bah briefed the media on how the robbery was planned and carried out. He said: “The plaintiff, Bài Nyass Bah and his friend from Abuko wanted to rent a taxi for their use for five days and they agreed on the rental period with the main suspect in the case, Abubacar Touray, who did not have a taxi but had a friend who had one and lent him his taxi.
“He charged Bài Nyass Dh10,000 for five days. Bai Nyass, unaware of Abubacarr Touray’s plan, agreed to the charge. That night, he brought his friend and got into the taxi after negotiating with the taxi driver until around midnight on June 16. Unknown to Bài, the suspect had agreed with his fellow passengers to hire another taxi to ambush him and his passengers.
“While they were making these arrangements, the team also borrowed a taxi from someone living in Faji Kunda through another suspect, Demba Jarjue, boarded the vehicle and started driving towards them. They walked ahead of them along Mile Seven Road, the crime scene, pretending to have a breakdown. That’s when the taxi driven by the main suspect stopped and pretended to ask what happened. That’s when Demba and his accomplices rushed towards the other car, sprayed them with pepper spray with knives and threatened to hurt them if they moved. That’s how they robbed them of their belongings. Three mobile phones and Dh40,000 in cash.”
Officer Pat said that after the robbery, the main suspect Abubakar, who still pretended to be unaware, suggested that they report the case to the Bakau police station. When they arrived at the police station, it was already after midnight on June 17.
“When they reached the police station, they reported the matter to the district commissioner who arranged for a team to follow up on the matter due to the seriousness of the situation,” Pat explained.
“With his coordination, he contacted me and I also coordinated. When we started interrogating, we later realised that Abubakar was the mastermind of the robbery and he started confessing, revealing the plan and his accomplices.”
Officer Pat further narrated: “With the cooperation of Abubakar, we mobilized a special team to hunt them down. He led us and fortunately, we were able to arrest all of them. We arrested Demba Jarjue in Kotu, Ebrima Sarr, Edrisa Sesay and Ebrima Konate in Fajikunda and brought them to the Bakau Criminal Investigation Department where they confessed to the robbery.”
He said they also led the police to recover mobile phones and money stolen from the complainant. However, the Dh40,000 was not recovered in its entirety, but Dh3,900 was found in the possession of one of the suspects and another Dh2,000 in the vehicle used by Abubacarr.
Officer Pat said police will continue to investigate and search to collect more evidence and recover the stolen items.
