Complex scam warning

Kelowna RCMP are warning the public about a new scam that appears to have emerged on Facebook Marketplace.
Police say several people in the Okanagan have fallen victim to the scam, where the victims themselves were the sellers.
In this scam, the potential buyer is willing to pay full price for the item and claims they will transfer the funds to the seller via electronic transfer, asking the seller to check their email for a notification. When the seller receives the email, there is a link that directs the seller to a legitimate-looking bank webpage.
The seller is then asked to enter their bank details as well as their phone number to receive a verification code via text message.
Once all the information is entered, the scammers can directly access the victim’s bank account and transfer funds out.
“This is an extremely sophisticated scam, a variation of the one-time password scam,” said Officer Laura Pollock, media relations officer for the Kelowna RCMP. “We encourage you to conduct market transactions in public places with security cameras.”
