Police officer, main suspect in lawyer murder case, dies
…Video evidence contradicts the statement
Kaieteur News – The prime suspect in the murder case of lawyer Richard Lane died on Friday night while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Sheriff Toney Sulker was identified as the prime suspect, having ingested a poisonous substance.
Suerke initially told investigators that he found the lawyer dead in his car at around 22:13 on Wednesday, bleeding from a neck wound.
The car, Jaguar PYY 2850, was parked on the bridge in front of Ryan’s home at 183 Century Palms, D’Urban Backlands.
Suerke claimed that after he got up from the bed to get a drink of water, he saw Ryan slumped over the steering wheel of the car from the kitchen window. He also claimed that he rushed out to see what happened and found that the car door was locked, so he could not get in the car and had to call Ryan’s mother.
It was not until she arrived at the scene and instructed him to break the car window that an ambulance was called.
Police have detained Sooke for questioning, but he denied any involvement in Lane’s murder. In a written statement, police said Sooke insisted that he went to bed after Lane and his cousin Michael Harding left home.
However, video evidence obtained by police showed he lied in his statements about Lane’s murder.
Meanwhile, Harding said in his statement that he took Ryan to Movietowne in his (Harding’s) car to get some Starbucks coffee before taking Ryan home.
He said he left Ryan’s residence at around 20:17 and claimed the attorney was safely at home with his car parked in the garage.
Police released Harding and Suerke Thursday night because there was no evidence linking them to the crime.
However, the plot twist occurred when police found video evidence that contradicted Suerke’s story.
Evidence suggests that Surk may have been the last person to see Ryan alive, rather than his cousin.
Police said in a statement that CCTV footage obtained from cameras on Sherif Street showed Ryan and Surk at the Kamboat Chinese restaurant at around 21:31 that evening.
Suerke was seen walking into the restaurant and then walking out with a white plastic bag containing what appeared to be Chinese food. He got into the front passenger seat of Lane’s car and drove off.
The car was last seen on camera at around 21:39pm as it headed towards D’Urban Backlands. Ryan was reportedly found dead after 22:00pm.
Before police arrested him for further questioning, Ryan received a call from his mother saying that Suerke had been rushed to the hospital.
The woman said she was leaving Ryan’s home when Suerke drove quickly into the yard.
She reportedly turned around to see what had happened and found him lying on the ground floor of the house, vomiting a green substance. She called an ambulance and rushed Surk to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Police arrived at the house and found bottles of suspected toxic substances in Suerke’s car.
They also found the clothes that Surk was wearing in the footage, but they had been washed and hung out to dry.
They placed the items and some other dirty clothes in a nearby basket and took some DNA samples from Surk for forensic testing.
Before his death, Sukel told police that he met Lane four years ago and the two became friends. Lane had asked him to move in and they had been living together since then. He denied having an intimate relationship with Lane.
