Police detective shot and killed while arresting murder suspect

Apia, Samoa – July 22, 2024 – Detective Sergeant Peniamina Perite was shot dead while arresting a murder suspect in Fasitoo-uta village this afternoon.

His body was taken to the National Hospital mortuary late this afternoon, where police held a brief prayer ceremony.

The Department of Police, Prisons and Correctional Services (SPPCS) highlighted the detective’s service in a press release, “He is a dedicated and exemplary police officer who has served the Department with distinction, honour and unwavering commitment.”

Detective Perite and two other officers went to Fasitoo-uta to arrest a murder suspect where a man from Nofoalii was allegedly shot dead on Sunday night.

“The Samoa Police are working closely with the Village of Fasito’o-uta to locate the suspect who is currently at large. We would like to assure the public that we will do everything we can to bring the perpetrators to justice and keep the community safe,” a Samoa Police Department press release stated.

A police statement said his contribution to law enforcement in Samoa was invaluable and his passing would be deeply saddened by his colleagues, friends and the community at large.

“Throughout his distinguished career, he demonstrated exceptional skill, integrity and dedication to duty, and was not only a highly respected officer but also a mentor and friend to many.

“His commitment to justice and his compassionate approach to police work have earned him the admiration and respect of all who have had the privilege of working with him.

“The ministry extends its deepest condolences to his family and asks the public to respect his family’s privacy during this time of grief.”

The police will also hold a memorial service to commemorate the fallen officers.
