Malawi police have banned major newspaper The Nation Online from broadcasting live the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) convention, citing a ban on the use of mobile phones when the president is at the event.
“We were told that the use of mobile phones was not allowed under the law, but the officer could not specify which law,” The Nation Online reported in a Facebook post.
State police spokesman Peter Kalaya insisted that the use of mobile phones at events required permission from the State House, even though the outlet had used the same device for updates over the past two days without issue.
The incident has raised concerns about media freedom in Malawi, with critics arguing that the police action was an unnecessary restriction on news reporting.
President Lazarus Chakwera is currently attending the conference at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
