Police say they have arrested an ICT student at Mzuzu University for allegedly using a fake Triephornia Mpinganjira Facebook account to defraud Malawians of their money.
Police spokesman Peter Kalaya has identified the student as Kenneth Feston.
“According to a complaint from Ms Triephornia Mpinganjira that someone was using her name on Facebook in a fraudulent and dishonest manner, the MPS Cyber Crime Unit arrested Feston on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the Mzuzu University campus.
“The suspect, an information and communications technology (ICT) student, has demonstrated how he created and used fake accounts to trick victims into sending him money with promises of high returns,” Karaya said.
Karaya said investigations revealed that Feston used the phone number 0991203482, to which victims wired advance payments as investments in his so-called “Fidelity Savings Program”.
He said Feston also allegedly hosted various “trophy” events, promising lucrative rewards to participants, but their contact was severed after the victims wired him money.
“The MPS therefore calls on all those who have transacted with the suspect using the above number and believe themselves to be his victims to promptly report the incident to the nearest police station.
“The bureau also warns Malawians not to fall victim to scammers by making deals that seem too good to be true from people they have only contacted online,” Karaya said.
Feston, who hails from Mwankhumwa village in Mpuka Traditional Authority, Thyolo County, was charged with three offences: theft by trickery, sending spam and obtaining money by false pretenses.
