The Zambia Police Service arrested and formally charged Dr. Fred Mmembe, 65, with sedition contrary to Sections 57(I)(C) and 60(I)(B) of the Criminal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that between 13:00 and 14:00 on 16 July 2024, Dr M’membe published an article on his Twitter and Facebook pages titled “Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic bishops $20 million will be paid to buy Zambia’s silence”.

It is alleged that the contents of the article were intended to arouse hatred or contempt for the legally established government or to incite discontent against it.

Dr M’membe is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges against him.

The Zambia Police Service wishes to remind the public that the law will be applied firmly and impartially to all and any actions aimed at inciting hatred or disaffection against the Government will be met with appropriate legal action.
