Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese discussed their vision for a transformed Australia-Solomon Islands partnership.
In a joint statement, the Australian Prime Minister said the two leaders were committed to working together to achieve common aspirations and overcome challenges through an equal and enduring partnership.
This approach will foster greater cooperation, help the Solomon Islands strengthen its sovereignty and resilience, and more quickly achieve its economic, development, and security goals.
Economic growth and job creation are vital to the future of the Solomon Islands.
Australia is committed to creating jobs, delivering priority infrastructure and building prosperity for the people of Solomon Islands through its long-term economic and development partnership.
Australia is an important tourism market for the Solomon Islands and the two leaders agreed to continue working together to find ways to attract more international investment and provide safe and high-quality infrastructure to the Solomon Islands.
They noted that Solomon Islands places great importance on the development of the Port of Bina. They welcomed the shared economic benefits of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Program, which is also building important community and people-to-people links. Leaders look forward to further deepening ties through the new Pacific Engagement Visa.
The two leaders noted Australia’s position as the Solomon Islands’ security partner of choice and discussed Solomon Islands’ request for Australia to assist in expanding and building the capabilities of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, including the Solomon Islands Government’s ambition to increase its police force from 1,500 to 3,000 officers – a 10-year transformation program that will support the Solomon Islands Government’s ambition to gradually increase the size of its police force to 5,000 officers.
The leaders asked ministers and officials to work together to determine next steps and consider the basis on which this request would further strengthen sovereignty and regional stability.
