The number of candles with white flowers scattered among the brown leaves surprised the people of Panevěž.
The trees in Chestnut Alley on J. Basanavičius Street confuse the seasons every year, but this time the flowers were unusually abundant.
“It’s such a pity to see the flowers amidst the brown leaves. Aldona, who lives across the street, looked at the chestnuts from her apartment window and said regretfully, ‘Don’t fallen trees have to be cut down in the spring?’
Gardeners are also observing unusual blooms for this time of year.
Ričardas, who lives in the gardeners’ community in the village of Kaubariškis, was surprised by a blossoming pear tree, and Auksė, a Welsh woman, told about watering the primroses blooming in her garden.

Disadvantages
Plants that normally flower in the spring flowering in the fall was a rare phenomenon thirty years ago, but has become more common in the past few years.
Dr. Martinas Kazlauskas, deputy manager of the Botanical Garden at the Siauliai Academy, said that this phenomenon is not common.

“Chestnut is not a plant that blooms twice in a season. Normally, we would see them all blooming in the fall, not just some,” says M. Kazlauskas.
The naturalist links this phenomenon to the stress that the trees are experiencing and points out that it is no coincidence that the trees that grow most often in cities are blooming again at the wrong time.
“The city does not offer them the most favorable conditions. Trees near the streets absorb road salt in the winter, and the heat in the city is significantly higher in the summer – the asphalt radiates more heat. A tree growing under natural conditions does not experience this. These conditions are not encoded in its genes, so when a new combination of conditions is formed, the plant’s behavior becomes unpredictable”, comments M. Kazlauskas.

New chestnuts won’t mature
Naturalists point out that the current flowering of trees is completely meaningless.
In nature, plants ripen their fruits by stacking their flowers and replacing the old generation with the new.
“Obviously, the trees that are already in bloom will not produce mature chestnuts. The season is not going in the right direction and the energy is wasted,” said the head of the botanical garden.
According to M. Kazlauskas, the end of the drought may also have stimulated the flowering of chestnuts.
Plants can usually survive the entire winter during the dry season.
“Perhaps now that they have received moisture, they realize that winter is over and it is time to gather buds and bloom,” the naturalist believes.
Rhododendrons blooming in the botanical garden
However, according to scientists, there is no need to worry that the flowering tree will use up all its energy.
M. Kazlauskas assures: During the coming winter and next spring, the plant will weaken, but will not die.
“This is not a common phenomenon, but it is not unique either. At this unusual time, we also saw flowering trees in the densely populated Šiauliai region,” the naturalist said.
According to him, the plants growing in the botanical garden also have a joke. About 1% of the 200 different species of rhododendrons are currently blooming. These beauties.
According to the manager, this is not the first year this has happened.
“But they won’t die from this,” Kazlauskas assured.
