SAO PAULO (Reuters) – A passenger plane with 62 people on board crashed in Brazil today and authorities said all the passengers were killed.
Video footage shared on social media showed the plane appearing to crash behind a bush, followed by a large column of black smoke.
The plane, which took off from Cascavel in Parana state and was bound for Sao Paulo’s main international airport, crashed in the town of Vinhedo, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo, Walpass said.
The airline said it could not provide further information about what caused the plane, registration PS-VPB, to crash.
Flight tracker FlightRadar24 identified the plane as an ATR 72-500 turboprop. ATR is jointly owned by Airbus AIR.PA and Italian aerospace group Leonardo LDOF.MI.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, speaking at the event, called for a minute’s silence for the victims of the crash, adding that all those on board had died.
The Sao Paulo state fire brigade rushed seven teams to the scene of the accident, according to posts on social media.
