Remember the Mob
The non-governmental organization Thapoha Trekking Club will be working with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) to embark on the Three Ranges Trail, a 14-day, 301-kilometre trail from Molifi, the lowest point in Lesotho, to Mohales Hook,Head to Thabana Ntlenyane, the highest point of Mokhotlong.
thoriumEgyptThe event will be held from September 29 to October 11 this year, as announced during a media briefing held at the Naledi Global Healing Centre on Friday.
The trail is designed to cater for hikers of all abilities and preferences. The project is sponsored by Global Cure and the Lesotho Metropolitan Area.
The Three Mountains Trail is named after the three mountain ranges it traverses: the Thaba-Putsoa Mountains, the Central Mountains, and the Drakensberg Mountains.
Pokane Chesa, manager of Thapoha Hiking Club, said in an interview with the media that the route?will? It starts at the confluence of the Senku River and the Mahalun River. It is 1,389 meters above sea level. This is?The lowest point in Lesotho. The route’s destination is 3482 meters above sea level, the highest point in Africa south of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mr Chesa explained that the Three Mountains Trail covers some of Lesotho’s most beautiful landscapes and attractions such as the Dinosaur Tracks, Boritsa-tšuene Falls, Qhoasing Falls, Ketane Falls, Maletsunyane Falls, Matekane Airport (one of the most dangerous airports in the world) and Lesobeng Rock Arch.
“It passes through the headwaters of rivers such as the Telaling, Kakatu, Lesobon and Ketane rivers. It also crosses four ecoregions of Lesotho: lowlands, Senku Valley, hills and highlands, and passes through five districts: Mohaleshoek, Mafeteng, Maseru, Tabacheka and Mokhotlong,” Mr Chesa said.
In addition, Lekoro Ralebese, another member of Thapoha, said that the Three Ranges Trail is not only the first long-distance hike of its kind, but also the first segmented hike. It is divided into three parts: a four-day section from the trail start to Semonkong, a five-day section from Semonkong to Mashai, and a four-day section from Mashai to the end point.
Mr. Lalebesi said hikers will enjoy the best of Lesotho, including abundant sunshine, fresh air and clear streams. They will also experience the hospitality of the Basotho villagers, whose culture is largely unaffected by urbanization. Arrangements have been made for communities to provide services to hikers along the route, such as horse rentals, camping sites, homestays and meals at selected locations. This ensures that the hike has a positive impact on the local community and builds lasting relationships.
“The Three Mountains Trail provides a unique opportunity for people to truly experience high altitudes, walking from the lowest point in the country to the highest point and trekking at altitudes above 2,000 metres. It also provides a special opportunity to hike through Lesotho during the Lesotho Bicentenary celebrations. This initiative is supported by Global Cure and Metropolitan Lesotho,” said Mr Lalebesi.
Thapoha is a hiking club founded in 2010 by ten outdoor enthusiasts to promote a healthy lifestyle, encourage social networking and build teamwork through exploring the mountain kingdom.
Tebello Thoola, LTDC’s head of strategic marketing, said their role is to promote tourism, support tourism investment and provide limited incentives to investors. Mr. Thoola mentioned that about 95% of tourists come from neighboring South Africa, which is their main market.
“Tourism brings economic benefits to local communities while preserving local culture and acting as an economic stabiliser, particularly in rural areas, by providing employment opportunities. Europe is also an important international market and although there are fewer tourists from Europe, they tend to spend more money,” Mr Thoola said.
Lisebo Mositsi of the Lesotho Tourism Board thanked Global Cure and the Lesotho Metropolitan Area for their unwavering support to Thapoha and the role they played in hosting “such a wonderful event”.
