What started as a regular public auction has turned into a nightmare for the international program as participants question the entire process.

Botha: Refutes accusations

It is understood that some people who attended a public auction of items such as cars, office furniture and laptops held by Plan International in Lilongwe on Saturday were unhappy with the subsequent auction process and described it as a fraud.

There are strong allegations that the auctioneer who was managing the public sale had his own bidders, including some connected with the international scheme, who were clearly favoured during the sale.

For example, a shocking revelation by an unnamed individual claimed that some goods, such as cars, were sold to low bidders, while those who were interested in buying the same goods at a higher price did not buy them.

However, Plan International strongly defended its agency and refuted the allegations as baseless.

The agency’s head of communications, publicity and events, Winnie Botha, strongly denied that staff at her agency had purchased some items during the sale.

She, however, asked those who have evidence of corrupt dealings at the auction to report it to the agency, saying the organisation believed in transparency and accountability.
