Pirelli is ushering in a new era in tires at the Goodward Festival of Speed with another innovation in Cyber Tire technology, which connects the tire directly with the car’s electronics to configure it properly and improve safety and performance. The new initiatives made possible by Cyber Tire further raise the standards of connectivity and interaction first introduced by Connesso, which reports the health status of each tire through an app and identifies its characteristics through an identification code. The new technology page written by Pirelli is flanked by content on sustainability, with the brand announcing at the Festival of Speed that, starting in 2026, it will use FSC-certified natural rubber in European production. That is, from an ecologically and ethically correct supply chain.

Pirelli makes tires smart with Cyber Tire technology

The new initiative made possible by the Cyber Tire is the first ever to interact with and actively influence the electronic dynamic management systems (ABS, ESP and traction control). The dialogue between the tire and the car is made possible by software developed by Pirelli and integrated into the car’s electronic control unit. The first car in the world to feature this new interpretation of the Cyber Tire will be the Pagani Utopia super sports car equipped with P Zero Corsa, P Zero Trofeo Rs and P Zero Winter tires.

The tires of the Cyber Tire range communicate with the car’s electronics in order to configure them in the best possible way through sensors located inside the tires, thus optimizing the car’s behavior. They are connected via Bluetooth to the car’s electronic management unit, which, based on the input received, sets the various electronic systems in an ideal way to fully exploit the potential of a single point of contact between cars on any type of road surface. Road: rubber. For example, when the car is fitted with winter tires, the ABS will be set to shorten the stopping distance. Conversely, when equipped with semi-slick tires, the stability and traction control systems will be configured in such a way that their interventions on traction will be less hasty, since this type of tire offers higher grip parameters than conventional tires. In the absence of information, the dynamic management system works conservatively, i.e. based on the factory settings and taking into account the characteristics and performance of the tires mounted. This technological “awareness” therefore not only allows the car’s controls to work better, but also improves usability and safety.

From 2026, Pirelli will only use certified rubber in Europe

The new era of tires that Pirelli has begun is also based on a greater focus on the environment. In fact, the brand continues to invest in research and development, launching new materials to replace fossil materials and providing third-party certification of the origin, traceability and use of these materials. This path includes the choice to use only natural rubber certified by FSC or Forest Stewardship Council in all European plants by 2026, which will be communicated through a new logo on the sidewalls of the tires. The assessment parameters used by the FSC require that forests be managed in a way that protects biodiversity and benefits workers and local communities in a way that is economically beneficial to them. The world’s first road tire produced by Pirelli containing FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon appeared in 2021. Other important stages in this journey are the introduction of tires with FSC rubber in the Formula 1 Championship, starting with the first Grand Prix in 2024, and the debut of this certification in the cycling world a few weeks ago with the launch of the P Zero Race Rs.

The announcement comes as Goodwood further expands its use of sustainable materials with the supply of a wide range of certified tyres to the Jaguar Land Rover Group.
