Dhaka: Tens of thousands of protesters thronged the Bangladeshi capital on Monday (August 5), this time out of joy, after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her resignation, ending 15 years in power and fleeing the country.

Weeks of protests began peacefully as frustrated students demanded an end to a quota system for government jobs but have since turned into an unprecedented uprising against Hasina and her ruling Awami League party, amid lingering anger over January elections that jailed thousands of opposition members.

The government’s violent crackdown on the protests left nearly 300 people dead and further fueled public anger. The prime minister called the protesters criminals and said they should be dealt with with an iron fist.
