Bavarian Nordic said the order was expected and included in the company’s forecast for this year. Therefore, the order will not have an impact on the remaining capacity to support the response to the “health emergency of international concern” declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO announced the highest alert level last week due to the spread of the new Mpox subcluster. She also called for the expansion of the production of the Mpox vaccine.

There are two vaccines

According to the World Health Organization, there are two vaccines available against Mpox: MVA-BN from Bavaria Nordic and LC16, developed on behalf of the Japanese government. The disease, which has been called monkeypox for decades, can be spread by animals and between people through close contact, such as sex. Symptoms include pock-like pustules on the skin, fever and body aches. Experts are particularly concerned about subvariant 1b, which is prevalent in the Democratic Republic of Congo and some other African countries, including Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
