At the invitation of Attorney General Garcia Parasinghe, Assistant Officers of the Human Trafficking Division paid a working visit to the Office of the Attorney General and discussed with officers of the Human Trafficking Section the recommendations of the United States Department of Foreign Affairs Tier Report.
Suriname has been ranked second in the TIER report for many years and has moved up to first place this year. In addition, the head of TIP, Police Inspector Letitia Pinas, was named one of the top ten TIP heroes for 2024. It is based on the way Suriname has developed a strategy to combat human trafficking. The TIP report states that in order to maintain TIER 1 status, conditions must be included in the agreement and complied with, and the recommendations in the current TIER report will be taken into account.
Suriname has signed the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, which includes the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. According to the Protocol, each member state must protect victims of trafficking and prosecute suspects. Protecting victims is one of the main goals that must be followed. Over the past period of time, both the Trafficking in Persons Unit and the Human Trafficking Section of the Public Prosecutor’s Office have ensured that all minimum conditions are met.
Suriname will rise to the challenge and maintain TIER status 1. At the end of the evaluation, the TIP Hero Award was presented to the Attorney General. Earlier, officers of the Human Trafficking Section of the Public Prosecution Office warmly congratulated the TIP police team and thanked them for their professional work for the department.
