A 48-year-old man from Peterborough is facing multiple charges after allegedly making homophobic comments and burning a pride flag.
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 28 and police have classified it as a hate crime.
The Peterborough Police Department (PPS) said they received a call about a man holding a pride flag “shouting homophobic slurs outside a building toward an apartment” around 1:40 a.m. They said he was then seen burning the flag, but returned to the residence when confronted.
PPS said the complainant called back with additional information around 8 p.m., and officers responded to the residence.
Police said officers learned that someone had filed an online report about the Pride flag that had not yet been processed, which stated the flag was taken from another neighbor.
As a result of the investigation, an unnamed 48-year-old man from Peterborough was arrested and charged with one count of theft under $5,000, one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, one count of mischief under $5,000 and two counts of criminal harassment – threatening behaviour and failure to comply with probation.
Police said the defendant is currently subject to two suspended sentence orders with the conditions that he “remain peaceful and of good behavior and shall not utter, wear or hold any sign expressing, bearing or depicting any racial, ethnic, anti-Semitic, homophobic slur or wearing or holding any sign expressing, bearing or depicting any racial, ethnic, anti-Semitic, homophobic slur and/or threats of violence or death in any public place or where the public may hear it.”
He was detained and is due to appear in court on June 29.
