This October, Peter Tosh would have turned 80, and a memorial event will be held to celebrate his life and legacy.day Birthday celebration.
The Peter Tosh Foundation has launched a new initiative, Peter Tosh Town, to address the many inequities that exist in Peter’s hometown of Belmont-Bluefields.
Niambe Tosh, the group’s founder, said naming her father’s hometown Peter Tosh Town “is a powerful way to honour his legacy and ensure his spirit lives on in the community that shaped him”.
“This initiative by the Peter Tosh Foundation not only pays homage to his roots, but also empowers the people of Belmont-Bluefields by providing them with the resources and support they deserve,” Nyambe added.
Events planned for October include the Peter Tosh Foundation Benefit Gala in conjunction with the Peter Tosh Museum, the Tosh Legacy Lecture in conjunction with the University of the West Indies, Peter Tosh Youth Day at Belmont College in Westmoreland, the reopening of the Memorial Gardens in Westmoreland, and the Tosh Festival, an inaugural annual concert featuring top reggae and cultural artists.

Winston Hubert McIntosh, OM, known professionally as Peter Tosh, is a Jamaican reggae musician. He was one of the core members of the band the Wailers, along with Bob Marley and Bonnie Wailer, before becoming a successful solo artist and promoter of Rastafari.
Tosh’s two greatest albums were Legalize, released in 1976 and Equal Rights, released in 1977. The former called for the legalization of marijuana (ganja in Jamaican), for which he was a vocal advocate.
The year of his death, Tosh’s final studio album, No Nuclear War, was released. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1988.
