Lombe Chali, the wife of Petawuke Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel Banda, has been arrested and charged with aiding her husband to escape from lawful custody. The arrest took place on August 9, 2024, when Mr Banda escaped from custody while being taken to Chipata General Hospital on August 4, 2024.

In addition to Ms. Chali, two police officers and three prison guards were also arrested and charged in connection with the jailbreak. Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga identified the officers as Phineas Mfungwe, Benson Kabole, Moses Sakala, Nathan Mbao and Musa Spider Zulu.

Mr Hamonga said all six had been released on police bail and were expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges against them.

A police spokesman stressed that the force remains committed to upholding the law and ensuring that any offenders, regardless of their identity or position, are held accountable.

An upcoming trial will determine the legal consequences of the charges related to the incident.
