An investigation is ongoing after a fatal crash in Pompano Beach left a pedestrian dead Wednesday afternoon.
According to detectives Broward Sheriff’s OfficeAt about 4:22 p.m. on July 10, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a traffic accident with injuries in the 2500 block of East Atlantic Avenue. Broward County Sheriff’s deputies and Pompano Beach Fire and Rescue responded.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2014 Toyota Corolla, identified as Howard Yontef, was traveling eastbound in the right lane of East Atlantic Avenue approaching the 2500 block. At the same time, pedestrian Elena Mijajlovic was walking northbound near Southeast 25th Avenue and entered the eastbound lane outside of the designated crosswalk.
The front of Yountev’s car hit Mijajlovic in the right lane. Paramedics took Mijajlovic to North Broward Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
Detectives said Yontef remained at the scene and cooperated during the investigation. Driver intoxication, speeding or mechanical failure were not factors in the accident.
