Two people were killed and seven others were trapped in the rubble overnight when a hotel partially collapsed in a wine-brewing town on the Moselle River in western Germany, authorities said. All but one had been rescued by Wednesday afternoon. Report Associated Press.
Fourteen people were inside the Croft hotel when the building collapsed at around 11pm on Tuesday. Police said five of them were able to escape the hotel without injury as they were not in the collapsed section, but the others were trapped.
Rescue workers were able to contact some of them by mobile phone. But according to Joerg Teusch, fire and disaster protection inspector for the Bernkastel-Wittlich district, it was difficult to find them because two ceiling floors had collapsed on top of each other after one building collapsed.
Six people were rescued on Wednesday, and as of mid-afternoon, only one person remained trapped. Emergency crews were in contact with the remaining person and hoped to rescue him or her before sunset.
Among the first to be rescued was a 2-year-old child, who was pulled out unharmed, and the child’s mother, who was slightly injured. The child’s father was later rescued. Teusch said the cause of the building collapse had not yet been determined.
He said the original hotel building was thought to date back to the 17th century but additional floors were added around 1980. He added that construction work had begun on Tuesday but it was not yet clear whether this was related to the collapse.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a large cloud of dust as the building collapsed, regional public broadcaster SWR said. The rescue operation involved 250 emergency workers, including drone experts and rescue dogs.
