Parsons makes right move in chess qualifier

Justin Parsons won the recently concluded 2024 CB Gilkes Open Chess Championship, leading two other qualifiers to the finals of the 2024 National Open Chess Championship to be held later this year.

Parsons was the second-best finisher in the tournament, finishing with 6 points out of 7, one more than second-placed Ronaldo Rochester. Women’s Candidates senior Hannah Wilson finished third in the play-offs, earning the other two automatic spots in the national championships.

The final qualifiers are determined in the final round of the competition, with at least five players having a chance to claim the top three spots.

The key matchups in the final round saw Parsons take on Wilson on the main table, Lawrence Depradine playing white on the second board against veteran Osnell Harwood, and under-13 academic champion Aaron Jakaran taking on Rochester on the third board.

The results saw Rochester beat Jacaran, De Pradine beat Harwood and Parsons beat current Central American and Caribbean Under-16 champions Wilson.

The results showed that Parsons, Rochester and Wilson took the top three places respectively.

Other final results were: Noah Clarke defeated Cyprian La Touche, Chanon Reifer-Belle defeated Jerimiah Farley, and Alfred Sparman defeated compatriot Ernest King.

There was a tie between Mileke Sinckler and Savion Little and Allan Herbert and Chaz Reifer-Belle.

After the latest three qualifying rounds for the national finals, only three spots are left to be fought over.

The next event on the Barbados Chess Federation calendar will be the Primary Schools Inter-Team Chess Championship which will be held at the Wildey Sports Complex next Monday and Tuesday.
