Kitesurfer Bruno Lobo made his Olympic debut on Sunday with a strong performance in the Formula Kite Regatta. The Brazilian finished fourth in the qualifying round after four regattas at the Marseille marina.
In the first race of the day, the Maranhão rider got off to a good start and finished third, just eight thousandths of a second behind first place rider Valentim Bontus of Austria. His times have since dropped, but this did not stop him from falling out of the medal race. He finished seventh, 10 minutes and 20 seconds after the start.
In the third race, he performed poorly and finished 10th out of 20 runners, 34 seconds slower than the first place, Slovenian runner Toni Vodisek, who finished in 10:51.
The final regatta was important in consolidating Bruno’s position in the medal race. He finished fourth, eight thousandths of a second behind Azel Mazella of France, who finished first in 10:02.
In the end, Bruno Lobo finished fourth overall and fulfilled his dream of winning an Olympic medal in his first Olympic Games. Bruno will compete in four more regattas this Monday (5) at 7:13 am in Marseille, aiming to maintain his performance. A total of 16 regattas will be held to determine the medal categories.
