During the meeting, Minister Abdelkassim Fomba explicitly demanded accountability from the Mali National Olympic Committee for its poor performance at the Paris Olympics. “We went to the Olympics and came back empty-handed. In fact, the plate was never filled. We failed miserably. Several stakeholders were involved.”
The minister said he had now asked the NOC to explain the results. “We want to know what happened,” he said. He continued: “The state invested a lot of money in athletes who were not in good condition to participate in the Olympics. There are many aspects that deserve our attention because this is Malian taxpayers’ money. The NOC is not a group of friends who provide funds to please people. Minister Fumba pointed out that responsibilities should be determined to understand what measures are effective and what are not.
The Sports Minister stressed that when you fail to do your job, you either strengthen yourself or get off the boat. “We cannot continue to go on the international stage and be humiliated on the ground, it will not work,” he said indignantly.
