Ethiopian runner Tamirat Tola won the men’s marathon in Paris and broke the Olympic record, while Britain’s Emile Cairess finished fourth.
Tola won the championship in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 26 seconds, which was 6 seconds faster than the previous record set by Kenyan runner Samuel Wanjiru in 2008.
Belgium’s Bashir Abdi (2:06.47) finished second, upgrading his 2021 Tokyo Olympics bronze medal to bronze, with Kenya’s Benson Kipruto (2:07:00) third.
Keres was in second place at the 30km mark but dropped to sixth before making a strong run, overtaking two rivals to take fourth place in 2:07.29.
“It was a great race. I tried to pace myself, stay sane, stay calm and try to finish well,” Keres said.
“I just don’t want to leave anything on the track and race with all my strength and no regrets.”
However, there was disappointment for two-time defending champion Eliud Kipchoge, who struggled at the back of the pack and failed to finish.
The 39-year-old Kenyan was expected to become the first three-time Olympic marathon champion but dropped out of the race with just 10km remaining.
Keres’ British teammates Phil Sesemann and Mahamed Mahamed finished 46th and 57th respectively.
