On Sunday, the Olympic flame was extinguished in Paris, marking the official end of the 2024 Summer Olympics after two and a half weeks of thrilling sport and exciting moments. The Closing Ceremony, held at the Stade de France, was a high-energy, star-studded event that celebrated the achievements of the athletes and passed the baton to the next host city of the 2028 Olympics, Los Angeles.
In a Hollywood-style spectacular, actor Tom Cruise made a dramatic entrance, descending from the roof of the stadium to the sound of the classic Mission: Impossible theme song. Cruise greeted the athletes before taking the Olympic flag from gymnastics star Simone Biles. In the film, he placed the flag on the back of a motorcycle and rode away from the stadium.
The ceremony continued with a pre-recorded segment in which Cruise rode a motorcycle past the Eiffel Tower, boarded a plane and then skydived from the Hollywood Hills. For the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles, the famous Hollywood sign was modified with three additional rings, forming five intertwined Olympic rings.
Athletes from around the world performed well at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but only 12 African countries made it onto the medal table. Kenya led the African delegation with 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, ranking 17th overall. Algeria followed closely behind, tied for 39th place, with a total of 3 medals, including 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal.
Other African countries in the medal table include South Africa, tied for 44th place with 6 medals (1 gold, 3 silvers and 2 bronzes), and Ethiopia, which won 4 medals (1 gold, 3 silvers) and ranked 47th. Egypt and Tunisia tied for 52nd place with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze each.
Botswana and Uganda tied for 55th place, each winning one gold and one silver, while Morocco ranked 60th with one gold and one bronze. Cote d’Ivoire, Cape Verde and Zambia each won a bronze medal and tied for 84th place.
As the world says goodbye to the 2024 Paris Olympics, people begin to look forward to the next chapter in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games story, when athletes will once again gather on the world stage to compete against each other.
