Olympic athletes competing in the men’s and women’s triathlons in Paris battled strong currents in the Seine River, with images showing swimmers slowly moving forward.
New Zealand triathletes Hayden Wilde and Nicole van der Kaay spoke to Radio New Zealand about the strong currents before the race, saying they were just as serious as the water quality issues that had been publicly reported.
Wilde and van der Kaye said the current in the Seine was nearly three times higher than what they normally encounter in rowing events.
Oscar Wilde told First He has been training extra hard to adjust to the stronger currents.
“It (the current) can cause some issues because it makes it harder to swim. I’ve sacrificed a lot to get to where I am now. It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of blood, sweat and tears,” Wilder said.
