The opening ceremony of the Paralympics will be held on Wednesday (August 28), with 549 gold medals on offer in 22 sports.
Three years ago, Africa won 63 medals at the Tokyo Olympics, a third of them gold.
However, this medal total is lower than the 97 medals won at the 2016 Rio Olympics, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on preparations contributing to the decline.
Most of the continent’s success has come in athletics, with weightlifting being the second most successful sport for African athletes.
Gold medals were also won in cycling and judo, while football, table tennis and taekwondo each received a podium finish.
Ten African countries did not send a team to the Olympics, and another nine countries sent only one representative.
Eritrea belongs to the latter group, with the East African country also participating in the Paralympics for the first time.
