An Italian caregiver who helps the elderly has admitted that at least four people under his care died from drug overdoses, Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday.
The 48-year-old man reportedly contacted police in order to confess his guilt in the presence of a lawyer, but he did not indicate his intentions beforehand. Their deaths did not arouse any suspicion, Hina News Agency reported.
The man, who has been detained pending an investigation, said he did it to spare the men, whose oldest victim was 96, further suffering.
The man had no medical training but had worked as a home caregiver for the elderly for more than ten years, the report said.
He reportedly cared for around 30 people during that time and lived with some of them. Italian police are currently investigating whether there are other suspicious cases.
“Help me stop killing,” he reportedly told police.
