Under the PNG Connectivity Plan, a total of K1.35 billion has been spent on road connectivity between 2019 and 2023.
Prime Minister James Marape disclosed this at a press conference in Port Moresby yesterday.
The Prime Minister said road connectivity is consistent with economic activities in areas touched by the road
“For every K1.00 you invest you get a K4.00 return. That is the general principle of road investment. For this road, we will have an internal meeting to understand how the road is currently functioning and what economic activities can be generated by these roads, whether it is agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism or mining,” said Prime Minister Marape.
Prime Minister Marape said parts of the country’s existing highways are being rebuilt.
“Hiritano and Magi highways are being rebuilt, some of you may have seen the contract released last week for four lanes, which will extend beyond the four lanes that my government has delineated from Mile 9 to Laloki River, so now the contract for Laloki to Brown River has been released. Buluminski Highway and Highlands Highway, Sepik Coastal. As I said, Lae-Madang Road, the main road is running as a contract, and there are new roads that we are building.”
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has confirmed that local government elections will take place after the 2024 national census
“We don’t want these two important tasks to overlap at the same time. Counting the population and local government elections are equally important. I want to make it clear to the country that the census is a top priority. We will do our best to complete the census before we move on to the local government elections.”
