Panthers and Eels to meet in epic final rematch

The Rarotonga Club 15-year-old boys’ premier final will be a repeat of last year’s competition, with defending champions Tupapa Panthers taking on arch-rivals Awati Unikau Eels this weekend.

On Friday, the Eels defeated the Titikaweka Bulldogs 48-24, while on Saturday the Panthers triumphed over the strong Arorangi Bears 14-8 in the semi-final at Remaru Park.

The Eels came out swinging against the Bulldogs, leading 24-0 within 13 minutes of the first half. When the Bulldogs finally woke up, the Eels led 31-7 at halftime.

The Bulldogs were much better in the second half and were level with the Eels, however, it was a poor first 13 minutes that caused them trouble.

Both the Panthers and Bears struggled to find a rhythm early on Saturday. A first half marred by lapses in discipline saw the Panthers lead by 14 points at halftime to just three for the Bears.

The Panthers’ lead was established by a touchdown run by right forward David Mato and three penalties by Daniel Toya. Mato’s touchdown showed his strength and skill, playing an important role in the forward exchange, while Toya’s accurate shot kept the Panthers ahead.

The Bears found some momentum in the second half, especially through their junior defender Nia Remuera.

Remuela, who was only 18 years old, showed his potential by scoring a solo try in the 63rd minute to help his team get back into the game.

Besides him, prop Tua Tepai and locks Tanire Mokoroa and James Kora were also standout performers for the Bears as they worked hard in tight stages to provide a solid platform for their team.

Despite the Bears’ efforts, they struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the final 10 minutes.

The Panthers’ defense was very solid, especially the outstanding performances of forwards Filipo Schmidt and Filimoni Latiavura, which won the victory for the Panthers. In the midfield, Tua Ravula and Al Moimoisea also played a key role, using their strength and running ability to put the Panthers under pressure.

“This semi-final confirms the final prediction for Tupapa and Awatiu to reach the final and it will get more intense and interesting from here,” said Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager Ben Koteka.
