Cairo: Israel attacked a school housing displaced people in Gaza, killing more than 100 Palestinians and injuring dozens, the official Palestinian news agency reported on Saturday (Aug 10), while the Israeli army said it struck a Hamas command centre.
“The Israeli strikes targeted displaced people who were performing dawn prayers, causing a rapid increase in casualties,” the Hamas-controlled Gaza government’s press office said in a statement.
The agency said three Israeli rockets hit the school in Gaza City and described the incident as a “horrific massacre” with some bodies on fire.
The Israeli military said in a statement that its air force “struck a command and control center where Hamas terrorists and commanders were hiding.”
The Israeli Air Force carried out precision strikes against Hamas terrorists inside the Hamas command and control center located in Al-Taba’een school, adjacent to a mosque in Daraj Tufa, a shelter for residents of Gaza City. ”It added.
“Before the strike, we took a number of steps to reduce the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance and intelligence information.”
Two days ago, Gaza authorities said Israel attacked two other schools in Gaza City, killing more than 18 people, and the military said at the time it had struck a Hamas command center.
Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas in retaliation for its October 7 attack, but agreed to resume talks next week at the request of international mediators after intensive diplomatic efforts to avert a regional conflict.
Iran claims Israel wants war in the Middle East, while Hamas officials, some analysts and critics in Israel say Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is prolonging the war to gain political gain.
The war in the Gaza Strip has lasted for 10 months, and the Israeli army has been forced to return to some areas to fight militants again.

“For God’s sake, have mercy on us. Children and women are dying in the streets. Enough!”
The Israeli military said Friday that troops were carrying out an operation near the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, which it withdrew from in April after months of fierce fighting with Hamas.
After the military issued an evacuation order for parts of the city, AFP television footage showed large crowds of people walking or riding on donkey carts and motorcycles piled with belongings through dusty, damaged streets.
“We have been displaced 15 times,” said Mohammed Abdin.
As of Friday, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated that “at least 60,000 Palestinians may have moved to the west of Khan Younis in the past 72 hours,” said U.N. spokeswoman Florencia Soto Nino.
