KOROR, Palau – The Ministry of Health has hired eight nurses in the past two to three weeks and plans to hire at least 17 nurses by the end of the year, Health Minister Jaafar said on Wednesday.
The island nation has faced a shortage of nurses in recent years as nurses have resigned and left the profession. To address this, the Ministry of Health is developing a career ladder for nurses to improve retention rates and plans to continue recruiting to maintain adequate staffing levels.
In response to concerns about a shortage of orthopedic surgeons, Jaafar announced that Dr. June Raphael has been awarded a fellowship to specialize in orthopedics, and that long-time Palau orthopedic surgeon Dr. Botu will return to work at the National Hospital.
Olbiil Era Kelulau has provided funding to the Ministry of Health to support nurse recruitment. Several Palauan students have recently graduated with nursing degrees from the University of Hawaii, Palau Community College, and universities in Taiwan and the Philippines.
